Medical and Mental Health Counseling

If a student is in acute distress in class, you or another student can walk them to the Health Center for immediate professional help. No appointment is needed.

For everything else, students can visit GCC's Health Center to get and stay healthy. The Health Center offers first aid, OTC medications, flu shots, mental health counseling, relationship counseling, smoking cessation, nutrition information, and more.

Noncredit has a dedicated Mental Health Counselor, Margaret Mansour, who can meet with students and refer them to outside resources for mental health or medical needs.

GCC CARES: Center for Assistance, Resources, and Educational Success

Refer a student to GCC CARES if they are struggling with food, housing, or financial insecurity. Referring a student can address problems that would otherwise affect their health, grades, and well-being.

Services Offered by GCC CARES

  • Basic Needs Assistance: Guidance and referrals for students facing food and housing insecurity.
  • GCC CARES Market: Access to a food pantry (by appointment) and GoPass pick-up for students needing food or transportation support.
  • Fresh Success & College Corps Programs: Services and support for students facing economic challenges, including resources for educational expenses and job training.
  • CalFresh Outreach: Assistance with applying for CalFresh, California’s food assistance program, to help students with grocery needs.
  • Financial and Emergency Support: Information on emergency funds and short-term financial support for students experiencing sudden financial hardships.

How to Refer Students to GCC CARES

Academic, Transfer, and Career Counseling

  • Academic Counseling: Refer a student who needs to plan next semester's courses or check that a plan is on track. You can discuss which courses a student might take next, but always send them to Academic Counseling to finalize the plan. Online appointments are available.

  • Transfer Counseling: Refer a student who plans to transfer after GCC. Transfer institutions each set their own requirements, so send them to the Transfer Center to confirm they are meeting the right ones.
  • Career Counseling: Refer a student who is unsure which career or major to pursue. A Career Services counselor can suggest careers based on a student's strengths and interests, including ones they haven't considered.

EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services)

EOPS serves low-income students who also face at least one other disadvantage, such as being the first in their family to attend college. Students who qualify should take advantage of EOPS financial assistance and counseling.

Refer international students to the International Students office for help with enrolling at GCC, immigration, and navigating campus resources.

Assistance for Veterans

The Veterans Resource Center supports student veterans at GCC. Encourage student veterans to get involved with the programs it offers.

Foster Youth Support Program

The Foster Youth Support Program at GCC offers current and former foster youth a supportive community and essential resources to succeed in their educational journey. Through the EOPS office, this program provides academic, financial, and career counseling, Student Educational Plans, community activities, and financial support for essentials like groceries, textbooks, and transportation.

Eligibility

Current or former foster youth enrolled in credit classes at GCC, with a Ward of the Court letter, EOPS application, and intake meeting with a program counselor.

How to Apply

The student submits an EOPS application through MyGCC. An EOPS representative will contact the student after they apply.

Assistance for Formerly Incarcerated, Re-entry, and System Impacted Students

Rising Scholars creates a pathway into college for formerly incarcerated, re-entry, and system-impacted individuals from enrollment through graduation by addressing their academic and social needs.

Services and resources include expungement services, textbook support, tutoring, budgeting and money management, transportation (gas), academic and career counseling, job search, and job training.

Student Equity Learning Communities

GCC's Student Equity Learning Communities offer programs for Latinx students, African American/Black students, and APIDA students, including a variety of services, a strong social net, events, and assistance for those who qualify. Students do better when they belong to a supportive campus community, so encourage them to join.

LGBTQ Resources
