Maite Peterson was born and raised in Los Angeles. She is a proud graduate of the California Community Colleges System and the Cal State System. She joined GCC’s History Department in 2016 and she currently teaches History 111 - The Woman in American History; History 115 - Rebellious Women in Modern America; History 117 - U.S. History 1550 – 1877; and History 118 - U.S. History 1865 - Present.

Professor Peterson understands that most of her students are not History majors, so she works to demonstrate the value of studying history and the relevance it has to all of our lives. In her classes she uses history as a tool to teach critical thinking, effective reading and writing skills, with the aim of empowering students to make decisions based on facts rather than opinion. She believes everyone has the power to make positive changes in the world, and she encourages her students to recognize that even small actions can have significant impact.

Outside of the classroom, Professor Peterson serves as the Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Senate subcommittee and as the First Vice President of the faculty union, Glendale College Guild AFT – 2276. She is also one of the coordinators for Women’s History Month at GCC and serves as the faculty advisor for the History Student’s Association on campus.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling and camping with her husband and two sons. She also trains in mixed martial arts, with a focus on Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
