Study Abroad Faculty Application & ORIENTATION

As a full-time, tenured GCC faculty member, you can apply to be a study abroad program Faculty Director and help provide students the opportunity for a life-changing learning experience. Adjunct instructors can participate on a GCC study abroad program by applying as a Program Faculty in partnership with a full-time, tenured GCC Faculty Director.

Programs are instructor-driven and this is what allows the destinations and courses to be diverse. Instructors should have travel experience in the geographic region before leading a program. After a program proposal is approved by the Study Abroad Committee, the Study Abroad Director will work with instructors to develop itineraries, make travel arrangements and provide resources for the instructors to recruit students.

Teaching abroad is a very unique way of gaining a new perspective on teaching and your students, advancing your skills professionally and personally, and adding some adventure to your routine. Imagine teaching in a giant learning lab with smaller class sizes ranging from 20-30 students.

The call for proposals is put out twice a year for programs that are estimated to leave in 18 to 24 months. E.g. in Fall 2019, the call will be put out for programs for Winter 2021/Summer 2021.

Time of travel could also depend on the best travel season for that destination. If an instructor submits a proposal, e.g. to Thailand, the study abroad committee will recommend the earliest available season of travel.

Once a program submission is turned in, the program will be approved a minimum of 18 months before departure.

Instructors teach classes abroad with same rigor as on campus, adhering to Carnegie hours. A brief description of responsibilities include helping put program together, promotion of program, interview of applicants, teaching, and program management “outside of the classroom.” A full list of responsibilities is included in the link below.
